03.05.2026 – May 3rd Constitution Day
The Constitution of May 3rd (the Government Act of 1791) was the first written constitution in modern Europe and the second in the world, after the American Constitution. Adopted by the Four-Year Sejm, it transformed the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth into a constitutional monarchy, abolished the liberum veto, and introduced the separation of powers — a bold attempt to preserve the sovereignty of a state already threatened by internal decline and foreign intervention. For this reason, the anniversary of the Constitution is celebrated in modern Poland as a national holiday.
The Polish community in Mauritius celebrated May 3rd Constitution Day at Rioux Hunting Place, graciously made available by Omnicane. The gathering unfolded in a warm and relaxed picnic atmosphere. Our host, Mr. Jacques M. d’Unienville, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland in Mauritius, ensured with great generosity that nothing was lacking. Beyond the excellent food and drinks, guests could stroll through the estate and its surroundings, enjoying the tranquillity of the landscape — though “surroundings” is perhaps an understatement, as the Hunting Place extends over more than 330 hectares.
